In February 1990, the first production 850i rolled off the assembly lines of the BMW plant.
At BMW they realized that a self-image could increase sales at the Munich manufacturer which, at the time, were much lower than the current ones.
Six months after the official presentation at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show, the first 850i units were already in circulation.
The car was a Granturismo devoted more to everyday use than to outbursts on the track.
The design was certainly avant-garde for the time, with decidedly sharp edges and the imposing engine hood that ended on a tiny double kidney grille, as per the family feeling.
The rear was very massive, with gigantic optical groups, and an exhaust pipe for each side.
The cockpit was one of the most luxurious of the decade, with the premium leather interior as standard since 1993 and the instrumentation and console facing the driver, respecting BMW tradition.
The 850i was powered by a 60 ° v12 with 4988 cm3 of displacement, 2 valves per cylinder (24 total).
Power was around 300hp at 5200rpm, with a torque of 450nm at 4100rpm. Since its presentation, the BMW 8 series was identified by the 850i, but from 1993 the range was expanded with the 840Ci and 850Csi and, on that occasion, the 850i was renamed "Ci".
The 850i was produced from 1990 to 1994 and its production stood at 20,072 total units.
