Watches: Why the large disparity in prices of automatic watches?

More details: I have a growing interest in watches and want some more information about why prices seem to differ so extensively. For example, the difference in price between a Rolex Submariner and a Daytona can be up to €5,000. Additionally, what seems like a comparable IWC can cost as much as €15,000. When there is no real difference in material, where does the cost disparity come from?

  • A Rolex Submariner is a basic diving watch that has no special functions. The Daytona comes with a Chronograph what makes the movement more expensive than the movement of a Submariner.
Additionally the Daytona model itself is produced in limited numbers which makes it more expensive on the market.
Same goes for the IWC. The more limited and special a watch model is, the higher is the price you have to pay.
